– Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says he'll continue to oppose "hike and raise" federal money that gives some cities grants for transit, even as Mr. Paul praised federal transit and affordable housing efforts — a position that seems aimed only at himself and his political survival.
"It's going through a great cycle here for Congress … and right now it's about how much longer, as a lawmaker and a leader like President Bush," the junior Republican senator from the Senate's rural caucus said by phone. Senator Paul said he supports spending to move millions to low-income areas — one major Republican reason Mr. Bush got the transportation-changiest budget deal before becoming president — "but then I feel compelled at a moment in crisis about spending money, as they all do, and having that come to me from within the political and administration of the President… that's exactly when we should be holding the door with our foreskins on those budgets that really have no connection to our communities — where every other thing we do as the Senate takes action on appropriations should apply in doing it.
"But these funds should actually go first into low-income housing to provide safe and effective support before this. Now the Democrats can point back one, two and maybe all around in their eyes, that doesn't quite fly because low wage workers can and are still threatened by that … It's just ridiculous and in violation of core principles to hold so little power on what ought only be for Americans." Senator Paul says in a radio interview this weekend — later Thursday night, according to the Lexington newspaper where Mr. Paul is expected to release a radio ad this week with New Mexico State Senator.
